Our Piling Projects in Hertfordshire
Rectory Lane, Shenley WD7 – 65 bored bearing piles of 350 mm diameter, founded at 9.5 m to 12 m, with reinforced concrete ground beams and a 200 mm structural slab. Ground investigation showed Lambeth Group deposits over the Seaford Chalk, so piled foundations were needed to control differential settlement.
Whitehouse Avenue, Borehamwood WD6 – 19 bored piles of 350 mm diameter for two new semi-detached houses, with temporary sleeving through the upper 3 m of made ground, reinforced concrete ground beams and anti-heave protection. The substructure was delivered within a two-week programme.
Ground Conditions in Hertfordshire
Ground in Hertfordshire varies more than in most of London. In the south of the county, around Borehamwood, Elstree and Watford, sites often have London Clay or made ground near the surface. Further north, chalk is common, sometimes with clay-with-flints or Lambeth Group deposits above it, as we found at Shenley. Chalk can contain soft zones and solution features, so pile depth and type should always follow a site-specific ground investigation.
